Children must be feeling disappointed with cancelled school plays, sports matches & activities. They must be missing their friends because of the coronavirus outbreak. As per this UNICEF report Doctor’s advice is to let them be sad & help them deal with it by talking to them and exploring their feelings. in the scope of an adolescent’s life these are major losses.
This is bigger for them than it is for us because we’re measuring it against our lifetime & experience. Support, expect & normalize that they are very sad & very frustrated about the losses and that they are mourning. When in doubt, empathy & support are the way to go!
Children rely on their parents to provide a sense of safety & security. They take emotional cues from their parents anxiety. You need to stay calm & do not overshare your fears with the kids. You must try to have a proactive conversation with the kids & provide them with reassurance & guidance.
